Students in Stephanie Schochet's class at Herbert H. Lehman High School participate in a lesson study on the meanings of "crimes against humanity."

The Memorial Library and the Holocaust Educators Network offer programs during the academic year for middle school, high school, and college faculty in the metropolitan area. Past events have included a “Meet and Greet” with Holocaust survivors and local teachers developed in partnership with Facing History and Ourselves and a formal lesson study developed and implemented by teachers in New York City.

Most recently, 20 teachers participated in a workshop series entitled “Teaching about Trauma: The Recent and the Historical Past.” This series, comprised of three full-day meetings, included an inquiry into the connections between the study of the Holocaust and of the memory of 9/11; an intensive look at the history of Holocaust film and the question of comparative suffering; and a best practices workshop during which participating teachers shared innovative pedagogy for teaching about the Holocaust and social justice.

Participants in this workshop series will also join the HEN listserv, enabling them to take part in discussions of Holocaust and social justice teaching with more than 200 teachers from across the United States.

NYC-area faculty who wish to be informed of upcoming events at the Memorial Library may write to info@holocausteducators.org.
