The Holocaust and Teaching for Social Justice

Supported in part by a grant from the Library, survivor Irving Roth came to Salisbury University on July 21 to speak with teachers, students, and the community. In a workshop with teachers that formed part of a week-long training institute. Mr. Roth gave his personal testimony and provided insights on how to relate this difficult subject to students of different ages. Mr. Roth then spoke with a group of students participating in the ESWP Young Writers camp, providing an introduction to the Holocaust and relating his experience to the bullying students see in today’s schools. Mr. Roth spoke again that evening in an event open to the community. More than 90 teachers, students, and community members attended these events. On July 26th, Deborah Batiste, Project Director for the Anti-Defamation League’s “Echoes and Reflections” multimedia Holocaust curriculum, offered a workshop to local educators. The training was attended by 37 educators representing eight Delmarva school districts and both Wor-Wic and Chesapeake Community Colleges. All participants received a copy of the curriculum and its rich multimedia resources. Dr. Pautz remains extremely grateful to the Memorial Library, the Eastern Shore Writing Project, and Salisbury University, whose support enabled participants to take part in these events free of charge.
