Nadine.Ulsess replied to the topic Thoughts..on Orlando in the forum On Austrian Soil – 2016 Summer Seminar Responses 7 years, 10 months ago
Thank you all for you thoughts …
When I heard of Orlando I was thinking about hate and how hate is perpetuated, I have the feeling that hatred is again here in the middle of our society, in the middle of the discourse I hear on the street. Feelings of hatred for people, life-styles, ethnicities, religions, … that are considered “different”…[Read more]

Thank you for your honest response Tracei, you brought up some very important topics I feel I have to adress with my colleagues at school. When you are writing about relating to students at a human level I can’t just stop nodding my head. And I feel the same, through writing and sharing our writings in a classroom be get in a real contact with our…[Read more]

Wow, I feel so deeply thankful that I can meet all of you soon and learn from you. I feel the love and comfort you feel for the living beings being around you when reading your responses. When I was reading your lines, one of my favourite parts of Sondra’s book came into my mind. It is on page 53 when she introduced a quote by Van Manen “We can…[Read more]

Dear Amber,
thank you very much for your response. Teaching for me is dialogue and dialogue means that we are willing to and able to understand each other. Yes, Holocaust Ecudation goes beyond the atrocities of the Holocaust. For me it is about teaching social justice and human rights. We are all different and what I learn from Sondra’s book is…[Read more]

Response #2: A rather personal one
Sondra‘s book took me back to my childhood. I remember the first time I got in contact with the word Holocaust. I was about twelve years old and my mother helped an old woman in our village, who had locked her disabled son in her cellar for 18 years. The whole village was excited, people were telling horrible s…[Read more]

Response #1: „Political questions are far too serious to be left to the politicians.*“
Right at the beginning Sondra writes about what she learned from her mother: „No matter what they say or do, no matter how stunning their accomplishments in art, music, and philosophy, within every German, every Austrian, lies a Nazi in disguise.“ This sentenc…[Read more]

Hi Angela,
I can understand what you are saying about your closeness to Margret, I felt the same. For me it was an important experience to read Sondra’s book. Actually Margret gave it to me as a present shortly after I came to her school. When reading I felt like I knew the way my boss was taking in life and it made it very clear for me that I…[Read more]

Hi Angela,
wow, I cannot imagine a school with 1800 students. We have about 800 students and think that our school here is one of the biggest. I imagine that your work as a librarian keeps you very busy there. I also work close with our librarian, because I appreciate her work a lot. Last weekend I read this article and was thinking about Monika…[Read more]

Hi Mary Jo,
your work really inspired me. As I was writing in another post, two colleagues and I would like to offer an elective course in our school (this is not common in Austrian schools), and we are thinking about calling the course “Towards a global Humanities – Challenge and Change”. I wanted to ask you, if it is okay,if we call it…[Read more]

I really think your German Shepherd who thinks he is human counts! I really had to laugh when I was reading your comment about your dog! And I was wondering if your dog is also sitting there at the dinner table with you – because this is what our dogs, who also think they are human, do 🙂
My best,
